Understanding the Difference Between Grief and Depression

Grief and depression can appear to have many similarities on the surface. Both include symptoms like sadness, a loss of motivation, social withdrawal, and changes to eating and sleeping patterns.

However, grief and depression are not the same. Grief tends to ease as time goes on and can typically come and go as the days go on, being triggered by specific events, situations, or stimuli. However, most cases of depression do not tend to come and go. They typically last over an extended period and need the help of a mental health professional to begin the journey to healing.
