Social anxiety disorder is a form of anxiety in which the person experiences feelings of fear and anxiety in situations where they believe they will be judged by others. Triggering situations for those with a social anxiety disorder can include public speaking, going on dates, meeting new people, ordering at a restaurant, or being called on in class. A person with social anxiety may fear doing everyday tasks, such as eating or walking in front of others, for fear of humiliation or judgment.
Social anxiety disorder may cause some to withdraw from friends, skip out on important social events, or pass up life opportunities due to their fears of humiliation.
Social anxiety disorder can cause some to appear shy or like an outsider. The symptoms of this mental health condition typically begins in late childhood, with the child appearing to be more socially withdrawn than their peers.
