Anxiety is a normal human emotion that our brains develop in order to help keep us safe. Essentially, three levels of decision-making occur within our brains during specific situations. These include rational, emotional, and instinctive thoughts. Anxiety is theorized to act as a backup plan to get us out of situations we perceive as dangerous when our rational brain fails to come up with a proper solution.
So yes, anxiety plays a significant role in our survival. However, excessive and persistent anxiety can quickly have the opposite effect, causing health issues and negatively impacting our ability to enjoy life. If your anxiety is taking its toll on your health, happiness, and overall wellbeing, it may be time to talk to your doctor to determine if you are experiencing what is known as an anxiety disorder.
